St. Antony Monastery
The first monastery in Christianity
The Christians in Egypt say that Egypt have witnessed and given three parts to Christianity: The Holy Family seeking protection in Egypt, Evangelist St. Mark who came to Egypt and wrote down his gospel, and the Christian monasticism. For the last point, here it's the hermit St. Antony who is consider the father of monasticism - and the monastery bearing his name is still active with around 120 monks. Mr. Ibsen I presume?
Based upon a forgotten travelogue by Henrik Ibsen. The author was invited to the opening of the Suez channel in 1869 and the tour went up the Nile all the way to Luxor. His writing was never finished due to another work that took all his time, and the sketch has never been translated before undersigned published the story some years ago in the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram Weekly.
