Desert and Oases
While the Western Desert cover nearly two third of Egypt, the country have two large deserts in addition. This is the Eastern Desert that follows the East bank of the Nile and stops by the Red Sea. The third is the mountain desert of the Sinai Peninsula.

To stay in the Eastern Desert needs preparation, and most visit this area from the resorts along the eastern Red Sea. In Sinai there are some places to stay outside the resorts, and then of course our favourite Al Arish in North Sinai where one can witness real Bedouin markets that are not a show for tourists only.
All these three deserts got oases, but the real large ones are found in Western Desert. There are five main oases and the fifth, the Siwa Oasis is in north close to the Libyan border. The four others are located in a bow from Cairo to Luxor, and these are from North to South: Baharia Oasis, Farafra Oasis with the famous White Desert, the largest of them all, the Dakhla Oasis and the one closest to the Nile Valley, the Kharga Oasis. This last can actually be reached on a full day tour from Luxor, but at least one night in Kharga is recommended.

Do
you think all is only ancient Egypt and art? Well, here is an important painting from Mr. &
Mrs. Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum.
This is Gaugin with a rather unknown piece of work (a
bit symbolic as Edward Munch)
Luxor is
a rather small town compared to Cairo and Alexandria. Still, no place on this planet can you find so many monuments gathered at one place as here. One normally needs more than a package tour to be able to enjoy the city and see a fair part of what is found here.
