Aristotle's famous student Alexander the Great founded the city of Alexandria in 332 BC, and the city served as capital for the country for a thousand years.
The western main branch of the Nile through the delta ran out in the Mediterranean here by the small Ancient Egyptian city of Raqote. This branch was named the Canopic branch (from where we have the name "Canopic jars" used in embalming) and although this branch had ran dry before Alexander came here, the good harbour was most likely the main reason he choose the area of Raqote to build the new city.

The Greek period ended after 300 years with Cleopatra the 7th, and later St. Mark the Evangelist settled here and gave the foundation for the Egyptian church. In more modern times Lawrence Durell's "Alexandria Quartet" became cult literature for a whole generation in the west, and the Greek Alexandrian poet C.P. Cavafy was introduced to the world.

Today a renaissance has come to this ancient city once again, first by the finding of Cleopatra's city under water and secondly by the new library in Alexandria. Just remember, although by the Mediterranean, Alexandria is not a standard Mediterranean city - it's a city with its own myths and legends.
