Old Cataract Hotel

If someone has seen the star packed movie version the mystery novel "Death on the Nile", then its here at Old Cataract Peter Ustinov, Jane Birkin, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, David Niven & co unfolds part of Agatha Christie's drama at the terrace and in the hotel's Moorish ballroom.

Already two years after this legendary Cataract Hotel opened in 1899 the hotel management had to set up tents around in the gardens to be able to book place for all those who would keep company with Royal Families and world leading figures.

The entrance hall puts you directly into another world, the facade is prestigious and the garden doesnt end before it joins the Nile.

The terrace with view to Elephantine Island.

From the terrace one can enjoy Aswan's wonderful nature with the large white sails of the traditional feluccas filling the Nile view from sunrise to sunset. The Elephantine Island is in view and nearly in reach - and that's where the ancient Egyptians knew the River God himself lived...

The legendary ballroom, today the main restaurant.

The grand and nearly unreal Moorish Ballroom with its domed roof serves as the hotels "1902" restaurant. A combination of gourmet dishes and grand design fulfilled in one of the worlds leading heritage hotels.

This detail from one of the rooms should tell the story of what to expect here. Still, maybe the most special part with Old Cataract is that it must be one of the most romantic hotels in the world. Hardly any place can one see as many couples of any age, holding hands while strolling the gardens or enjoying the sunset from the beautiful terrace.

The four of us who is responsible for Egyptmyway.com have a collected experience of more than half a century in management positions within Egyptian tour operations. Holding lectures in Egyptology as the modern culture, guided special journeys and been responsible for television and film productions. Hotels, luxury tour operators as Abercrombie and Kent, American Express Travel and European charter operations to this destination.
