Oberoi Mena House Hotel
Oberoi Mena House Hotel was originally a royal lodge built for Egypt's Vice King Kedive Ismail and used when he and friends were hunting in the desert or visiting the pyramids.
Rooms was added to Mena House in 1869 for the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal as the Kedive wanted Empress Eugenie to see the pyramids and then from a proper place. When the palace later came on private hands, it was given the name Mena House after Pharaoh Mena, the first ruler of a united Egypt.
From the first private owner the ownership of Mena House palace went to Locke-Kings from England who decided to turn Mena House into a truly luxury hotel. Mashrabia work (traditional wood work) was added, medieval brass-embossed and carved wood doors and a large dining room designed as the interior of a mosque. An advertisement for Mena House hotel from 1890 described it as a "First Class Family Hotel at the foot of the Pyramids".

Today a large swimming pool is added and a whole new hotel section in the garden. Under the management of Oberoi Hotels the Mena House continues its strong reputation as a true luxury hotel where royals as stars of the silver screen, truly can feel at home.
Many important international conferences have been held at Oberoi Mena House including important meetings in front of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. The hotel manager of Mena House gave then President Carter and late President Sadat a replica of the hotels master key with the inscription "Blessed are the Peacemakers".
This photo is from the garden and palace section of Mena House looking towards the pyramids, all looking very much as it does on old sepia coloured photos of the hotel. The newer section of Mena House is situated more directly in this historical and beautiful garden - a unique place to wander in moonshine with the grand pyramids just some meters away from Mena House.
Mena House reception and lobby area is majestic to say the least, a true image of what this hotel represents.
The palace section got an architectural design that can easily force one to sit down and just look around.
Long corridors in Mena House meet at grand central points. All is not only grand and majestic as splendid details in all parts are what make the Oberoi Mena House a legend among hotels.
Grand restaurants and distinguished cuisine is what's found at Oberoi Mena House. The photo above shows how you can sit with large windows that give you full view of the pyramids. The Al Rubayat Restaurant serves continental dishes and the dining hall is filled with arabesque decorations, Mashrabia and antique Islamic lamps. If you want Indian food, then the beautiful Moghul Room is the place while Khan El Khalili offers Egyptian and continental dishes around the clock at Mena House.
Even the grand lobby bar in Mena House gives you a truly unique panorama view to the pyramids. Try a small dish in the Mamluk Bar or spend the evening/night in Abu Navas nightclub. During summertime the outdoor Oasis Club can be what you are looking for, and if you want to dance in style, then the Saddle Discotheque is the place.
Oberoi Mena House got 572 rooms and suites. All rooms with individually controlled air-condition, television with satellite channels, minibar, international phone and large bathrooms with shower and bathtub.
Along with standard rooms one find suites with names as the "Churchill suite" and the "Montgomery suite". This reflects the fact that the hotel has been a historical meeting place and a preferred place to stay for international persons from Kings and Queens to Charlie Chaplin. Long corridors, furniture with inlaid mother of pearls, arabesque design, handmade tiles and doors with copper decorations. Mena House is a hotel where history and dreams still lives in every nook and corner. The photo above is from the bedroom in the Montgomery suite.
The ballroom and conference centre in Mena House is the ideal place for meetings and conferences - or what about making it all a bit special and have a wedding here? Don't worry for your invitation list; the ballroom takes up to 1000 guests!
