Map of Greater Cairo

What we normally call Cairo is in fact two parts with each their own governor. The city on the east bank of the Nile is Cairo, while all of Cairo on the west bank is called Giza so the whole city should correctly be called "Greater Cairo". Giza is in fact so large that it even includes Baharia Oasis which you find 320 kilometres (200 miles) deep into the Western Desert.

From the area of the Giza Pyramids one can take the desert road (quite green today) to Alexandria, or to the new October City and from there out into the Western Desert. Mohandeseen is one of the good places for shopping and on the south tip of Zamalek one finds the beautiful Cairo Opera House.

Cairo International Airport is located in the Northeast section as the business and conference area of Heliopolis. Ain Shams University is one of the best universities in Egypt, and not to far from Ain Shams one finds Matariya where once the wisdom of ancient Yunu formed a fundament for the Western culture.

On the east side of the Nile one can find the residence area of Maadi, Old Cairo and the downtown area where the Egyptian Museum is located. On the east side of the Nile Mohandeseen and Dokki is important areas, and if one follows the Pyramids Road westwards - yes then you will end up by the large pyramids of Giza. From this area one can drive south to Sakkara and Memphis or southwest to the Fayoum Oasis.

In the Southeast area one finds Muqattam Hills and the Citadel of Cairo. Below is Old Cairo with remains of important Christian, Jewish and Islamic culture and monuments. Medinet Nasr is a newer part of the city with many places for shopping as dining. Down town Cairo is a never-ending story in itself...
