Lake Nasser As the longest river in the world, the Nile enters Egypt from Sudan south of the Ramses II grand Abu Simbel temples. This area was the southest area of cataracts in the Nile and mainly inhabited by the Nubian population, today this part of the Nile is turned into the large man built Lake Nasser. The most important temples in this area were moved before the valley was flooded, but all these are accessible when following a Lake Nasser cruise.
The Nile Valley
From Aswan to Cairo is what Egyptians call the Nile Valley. A thin green belt of extremely fertile soil on both sides of the flood, and outside that, desert. On the East side what before was named the Arabic desert and to the west what before bore the name, the Libyan Desert. The Nile valley is in reality the longest oasis in the world, and the largest treasure chamber for monuments from the ancient history of our planet.
The Nile Delta
When the Nile on it's way to the Mediterranean, divides itself into branches after Cairo it also creates a flat green delta. This delta which in ancient times was named Lower Egypt had originally as much monuments as in the valley. Today most of these are gone, not at least due to the difference of weather and humidity here in the delta and further south in the valley. Still some remains are here, and the area is totally free for mass-tourism (which alone could be considered a plus...).
